How to Spot a Fake Phone or Laptop When Buying Online in Kenya
admin October 29, 2026
A phone or laptop offered far below the usual price is not always a bargain. Fake, refurbished, or copied devices are sold online every day, often with convincing photos. The good news is that most fakes give themselves away if you know what to check.
Start with the price and the seller. If the price is far below what other sellers ask for the same model, ask why. Check the seller’s other ads and how they answer questions. A genuine seller can usually tell you where the device came from, how long they have had it, and whether it is new, used, or refurbished.
Check the packaging and the device itself. Look at the spelling on the box, the quality of the printing, and whether the model name, storage size, and colour on the box match the device. Check the serial number in the device settings and on the box, and make sure they match. On a phone, dial the manufacturer’s check or look up the serial number through the maker’s official support page if you can.
Turn the device on and use it. On a phone, check the camera quality, screen sharpness, and whether the software looks and behaves like the real system. On a laptop, check the system settings for the processor, memory, and storage, and compare them with what the seller advertised. Open a few apps, connect to Wi-Fi, and check the battery, keyboard, touchpad, ports, and charger.
Be careful with accessories. A charger, cable, or battery that looks wrong, feels very light, or does not fit properly can be a sign of a copied device, and a poor charger can damage the device or be unsafe.
Meet in person, test the device yourself, and pay only after you are satisfied. Do not pay in advance for a device you have not seen, and do not accept pressure to decide in minutes. If you are unsure, take someone who knows electronics with you, or walk away and keep looking. There will always be another genuine device.
