How to Spot Scams on KENGOT: 6 Warning Signs
admin October 27, 2026
Most people on KENGOT are honest buyers and sellers, but scammers do try their luck on every marketplace. Learn these six warning signs and you will spot almost every scam before it costs you money.
1. Payment before viewing
Any seller who asks for M-Pesa, a bank transfer or a deposit before you have seen the item is almost certainly a scammer. Genuine sellers let you inspect first and pay on collection.
2. A price far below the market rate
A nearly new iPhone for KES 10,000 or a Toyota Corolla for KES 300,000 is bait. Compare prices on KENGOT first; if the deal looks too good to be true, it is.
3. Pressure and urgency
Scammers rush you with stories about another buyer coming now, or demand payment within the hour. A genuine seller gives you time to think and to inspect.
4. Refusal to meet in person
Excuses about being abroad, in the military or too busy to meet, combined with an offer to courier the item after payment, are classic scam signs. Always meet in a safe public place.
5. Requests for codes, PINs and personal details
Never share your M-Pesa PIN, bank details, ID number, passwords or one-time codes. No genuine buyer or seller on KENGOT will ever ask for them.
6. Stock photos and copied descriptions
Ads using catalogue or stock photos instead of photos of the real item, or descriptions copied from other sites, should be treated with suspicion. Ask for a live photo or video of the item.
If you spot any of these signs, stop the conversation, do not send money, and report the ad through the Report an Ad option or the Contact Us page. Read our Safety Tips page for the full guide.
